Mississippi Levees

We took a self-guided tour yesterday of part of the levee system that holds the Mississippi river. This farmland couldn't exist without the levee because it would get flooded periodically.

The levee has a dirt road on the top and we drove a 30 mile route. According to the brochure, this is part of a levee system that covers 1,700 miles, longer than the Great Wall of China. It is 25-40 feet high.

And, here's the culprit himself ... old man river ... the Mississippi.

Odie dreams of running away from home.

What you can't see is how fast it's moving. We saw a sailboat go whizzing by ... with no sails.

The primary crop is cotton.

But, just across the road is what looks like a Cypress Swamp ... with plenty of history.

Back at camp we had Dad's famous hamburgers for dinner.

Odie knows a sucker when he sees one!

To top off a great day - we had a roaring bonfire.
